This Vacuum Sucks Up or Blows Away Everything in Sight!

Comments about WORKSHOP Wet Dry Vacs WS0500WM Wall Mountable Wet Dry Shop Vacuum 5G 5.0 Peak HP:

I've had a couple of small shop vacuums through the years; one was just a vacuum and the other was both a wet and dry vacuum. Neither one was very impressive and the wet vacuum died shortly into a crisis situation when our basement flooded. I don't have an actual shop, per se, so I just wanted a wet/dry vacuum mostly for cleaning our cars, the garage and disposing of liquid spills. Though our basement is now watertight our washer and dryer are downstairs so even with a nearby floor drain there is always the possibility of a significant spill or water backing up into the basement; I live only a stones-throw away from Lake Michigan. Thus, I had a genuine need for a good wet/dry vacuum.

The Workshop Wet/Dry Vac (WS0500WM) seemed to have the potential to fit my basic need, and maybe more. It came with a nice complement of accessories and also included a couple of surprises; I'll mention those later. This vacuum comes with a huge owner's manual (54 pages). Anyway that's what I thought until I skimmed through it an found out it was divided into three different languages (English/Spanish/French). The smaller, 18-page manual still covers everything a user needs to know.

This 5-HP, 5-gallon (medium-sized) shop vacuum doesn't come fully assembled; yes, some assembly is required but by following the owner's manual assembly is quite easy. This is a portable vacuum (no wheels) that is reasonably lightweight and easy to carry. It can also be mounted on a wall for storage only (one of the surprises!) or it can be used in a stationary mode (like the vacs at a gas station or self-help car wash). The owner's manual dedicates several pages on how the 2-piece hanging rack should be properly mounted; I liked that since I do plan on mounting the vacuum in my garage. The unit comes with two vacuum hoses (one 2-foot hose that expands to 7 feet; another 14-foot hose that expands to 21 feet) that snap easily into the front of the vacuum and can be used separately or connected together for a whopping 28 feet of hose! There are a variety of cleaning attachments for vacuuming carpets, sucking up water from hard floors and getting into those narrow, hard to reach spaces around the house and garage. Two hard plastic extension wands are also included for vacuuming floors and reaching into overhead spaces. The attachments can be stored in a handy removable storage bin that snaps on securely to the side of the vacuum, keeping al of the accessories together in one place.

When my daughter came home from college recently she wanted to be the first one to use the Workshop Wet/Dry Vacuum to clean the inside of her car and the trunk. Once we had the shop vacuum assembled and transported to the garage it was time to plug it in flip the switch. This vacuum isn't any louder than a household vacuum and really packs a lot of suction power; definitely more than our Kirby. I would guess that my daughter had her entire interior and trunk vacuumed in about 15-20 minutes; and that included the removable floor mats. She used the extended 7-foot hose and a couple of the attachments to do the job. She said the vacuum was easy to move around (in and out of the car) and the hose was very flexible and easy to use. The detachable exhaust diffuser also does a good job of reducing the intensity of the exhaust stream, dispensing it over a larger area. (NOTE: The diffuser only has a thin sponge-like filter so it may not be ideal for indoor use). I did a simple test of the wet vacuum feature by spilling some water on the cement floor in the basement utility area. The suction was great and the large integrated filter worked very well.

Here is the second of the two surprises: Earlier I mentioned that this unit had an exhaust port with a detachable deffuser. I was initially curious why does this vacuum have such a powerful stream of exhaust that it would require a diffuser? Well, I discovered why. This vacuum is also a blower that can be used for yard work and patio or garage cleanup! Just remove the diffuser, snap in the locking end of either hose (or connected hoses), add an extension wand (optional) and turn on the blower. Workshop recommends safety eye wear be worn while using the blower feature. I have a blower, too! What a nice surprise this was. I blew some leaves out of our flowerbeds as a test and the blower worked just as advertised. Of course, the blower power from the individual shorter hoses was greater than the 21-foot hose, but hat was to be expected.

I was intrigued with the clever design of this compact vacuum/blower. With the exception of the 21-foot hose, all of the attachments, the shorter hose, two extension wands and the power cord can be stored on this self-contained unit at the same time. Even with all of this the vacuum/blower is still what I would consider a lightweight, easy to carry mobile product. The fastener clips that secure the top half of the vacuum/blower to the lower half are not easy to unfasten. I don't consider this a negative feature. In fact I would expect it to be snapped securely together considering this unit can carry gallons of liquid. I wouldn't want it any other way.

The owner's manual begins with two pages of safety instructions; there are also numerous Warnings throughout the manual. This is no toy and failure to use this vacuum/blower in a safe manner may result in injury; possibly serious injury.

This Workshop Wet/Dry Vac is definitely a keeper and is built to last a long time.

Postscript (15 Jan 2014): Our 80-gallon water heater died this morning and spilled its contents on the cement basement floor. It took a minute or two to get the Workshop vacuum in place, snap the hose and plastic wand together and hooked to the machine. When I clicked the power on the vacuum sucked up the dirty water like a champ! After the job was done I emptied the last vacuum bucket load of water and washed out the bucket, removed the filter and rinsed it clean as instructed in the owner's manual and left them both to dry.

Comments about WORKSHOP Wet Dry Vacs WS0500WM Wall Mountable Wet Dry Shop Vacuum 5G 5.0 Peak HP:

This WORKSHOP 5HP wet/dry vac is incredible! Replaced old R2D2 garage shopvac with this smaller model, which still has 5HP but a more-compact square drum. No wheels but EASY handle and carrying. It is pretty light, too, and small enough to use inside a car. Very handy not to worry about dragging vacuum across driveway, but still have the power of a full-size wet dry vac and blower.

The vacuum comes with normal and XL hoses, the longer of which is massive. With the tall end attachments, you can even leave the vacuum in its wall mount for most car clean-ups.

When you want it down, you just press the Release button and go. Easy. and includes a helpful top tray to wrap unused hoses neatly.

My one tip if you decide to put up the wall mount stand:

--- Be sure to find a wall stud behind your garage drywall before mounting the vac! And some drywall anchor screws are highly recommended. Though the vac is light when empty, a full can or being tugged by hoses could jostle the mount if it is not secured. Maybe they could include some in the kit in the future?

I really like knowing that the vac is always there in garage for cleanups. No compromises in power or cleaning quality to the car wash units. Definitely worth the upgrade to new motor electrics and much more versatile shape than old-school drum vac!!
